Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, composing the entrepreneurial story of a generation of people from Fujian.
In 1996, Guo Keci, who was over 30 years old, followed the wave of reform and opening up and went to New York alone to pursue his dream of "letting Fujian cuisine go abroad". But when he first arrived in New York to strive, Guo Keci had all his skills but no place to put them to use. He could only stay in a small restaurant. However, he believed that "gold will always shine", and with his superb cooking skills, he soon began to cook and once again wore the chef's hat he was familiar with on the other side of the ocean. He began to serve the authentic Fujian dish, Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, on the table and invited local Americans to taste it. After they finished eating, they all gave a thumbs-up. The recognition from customers greatly boosted Guo Keci's confidence, and he began to establish the brand of authentic Fujian cuisine in New York, USA.
Guo Keci not only showcased his grandfather Guo Zexian's ancestral cooking skill of "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall" in New York, but also continuously created unique Fujian cuisine, winning many "fans" in the local area. New York citizens affectionately call him "Guo of Fujian Cuisine". After years of hard work and exploration, Guo Keci gradually rose to fame in Chinatown with his solid and honest foundation. But Guo Keci felt that it was not enough for him to build a brand. He hoped to influence more fellow villagers. After much effort, the American Fujian Culinary Association was officially established in 2007. Nowadays, the association has dozens of member restaurants, and hundreds of members are working together for the cause of Fujian cuisine.
For decades, Teacher Guo has regarded the inheritance and promotion of Fujian cuisine culture as his responsibility and mission. He has been diligently studying, working hard and being an honest person, thus becoming a banner and a leading figure in the Fujian catering industry. He/She has been honored with numerous awards, including the title of Outstanding Figure in the Global Chinese Cuisine Industry, Outstanding Meritorious Figure in the Catering Industry, Innovation and Research Award for Fujian Cuisine, and Award for the Dissemination of Chinese Food Culture! He has spread Chinese cuisine and promoted the excellent Chinese culinary culture through his own practical actions, earning praise from all sectors of society.
The thousand-year-old Minyue culture has nourished generations of Min people and accumulated its unique Min cuisine culture. Every dish and every flavor has a story about people from Fujian who are away from home. May our Fujian cuisine achieve even greater success in the New Year under the guidance of more Fujian chefs.
